Martin Luther King, Jr., (born January 15, 1929, Atlanta, Georgia U.S.—died April 4, 1968, Memphis, Tennessee), was a Baptist minister and social change activist. Leading the civil rights movement in the mid-50’s and until his death by assassination in 1968, MLK’s leadership was key to the success of the movement that led to the end of legal segregation of black Americans in the South and other parts of the US. His famous March on Washington in 1963 was part of his nonviolent tactics to change American social injustice. MLK was awards the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964.
